What is Involved in Repairing your Dental Drill
Removing the back cap and removing the "O" ring and washer then discarded. The cap is completely cleaned and set aside. The turbine is removed and discarded. The "O" ring and washer are removed and discarded. Inside the head is thoroughly cleaned. A new set of "O" rings and washers are installed in the head and back cap. A new turbine is oiled and installed as described above. The drill is tested for proper operation, water ports ect.
How Long do They Last
Our turbines with proper maintenance can last about a year and sometimes more. The variable is in the amount of use and the maintenance. A proper number of drills per chair will make a huge difference. If the drill is coming out of the autoclave and going directly into service, your repair will not last 90 days. The drill must be aloud to cool completely before use or the lubrication in the drill will harden. This will make the centrifugal force inside the bearing uneven. The handpiece may not run as smooth and the bearing will eventually shear off at the inner race. The drill must also be dry inside the package coming out of the autoclave. If there is water inside the package it is also inside the drill. Excessive corrosion will develop and cause premature failure. These things are obvious to the technician and will void your warranty.
Why don't we rebuild turbines
In our experience over the years we have found a much higher failure rate in rebuilt turbines. While rebuilding turbines is acceptable in the industry, we have seen chuck failures after the bearings are replaced. We just wasted an expensive set of Myonic bearings. With proper maintenance and high quality parts, replacing the turbine each time is the best value. You know what you are going to get every time.
